GUEST POST: How To Keep Your Anxious Dog Calm On A Roadtrip

Embarking on a road trip with your furry companion is an exciting adventure.

Whether you're exploring new destinations or hitting the road for a familiar journey, the experience can be enriched by the presence of your beloved dog. However, for dog owners with anxious or reactive dogs, travelling can present its own set of challenges.

In this blog post, we'll delve into the world of travelling with anxious dogs, drawing insights from our own experiences on the #DogsInYellow tour. We travel extensively in our campervan, participating in dog shows & festivals across the country raising awareness for our anxious dogs that wear yellow. Our journey is accompanied by Bella, our beloved Cocker Spaniel who, like many dogs, experiences anxiety in new environments. Preparing for our trips in advance has become essential, particularly when it comes to catering to Bella's needs. Bella has her own holiday bag, carefully curated with an array of yellow gear and all her travel belongings. This collection isn't just for show – it's equipped with items designed to alleviate Bella's anxiety and ensure her comfort on the road.

From her yellow lead and harness to familiar toys & comforting blankets, each item plays a vital role in helping Bella navigate the challenges when we travel. One of the most significant challenges for anxious dogs like Bella is adapting to changes in their environment. The sights, smells, and sounds of new surroundings can trigger feelings of unease. Seeing your four-legged family member suffer from anxiety can be really heart-wrenching. Natural supplements derived from herbs, plants, and other organic sources, are a gentler alternative to many calming medications. We use PAWD’s Calming drink which contains lemon balm and passionflower - ingredients that have been used for centuries in traditional medicine for their calming and soothing properties and are well-known for their ability to reduce anxiety and promote relaxation - without the harsh side effects that can sometimes be experienced as a result of synthetic medications.

Plus, many natural supplements can be used safely over extended periods, making them an excellent choice for dogs like Bella with chronic anxiety issues. Unlike some pharmaceuticals that may be intended for short-term use, natural supplements can provide ongoing support without the risk of dependency or long-term health issues.

We recently had a road trip to Scotland as we were doing our Yellow Space Zones at “P in the Park”. We had a few days travelling up and a few days away on the return journey. I started to give Bella the calming supplement the day before we set off and then every morning to help her feel calmer. Using this with our specially crafted calming spray, which has been designed to enhance the natural relaxation mechanisms in your dog's brain. A unique blend includes essential oils such as low concentration Valerian, Vetiver, Sweet Basil, and Sage, all chosen for their soothing properties. This formula works harmoniously with your pet's natural pathways to help ease nerves and reduce anxiety effectively. Conveniently sized for on-the-go use, it is perfect for keeping in your pocket or dog walking bag. I spray it on Bella’s harness and on my trousers or shins when out on a walk especially when in busy areas.

In conclusion, travelling with an anxious dog requires careful planning and consideration. By anticipating your dog's needs and taking proactive measures, you can create a comfortable and enjoyable experience for both you and your dog. Whether it's packing familiar comforts or incorporating specialised calming products like PAWD, investing in your dog's well-being will ultimately enhance the bond you share and make your road trip memories even more unforgettable.

So, as you hit the road with your anxious pup in tow, remember to pack the essentials, stay patient, and embrace the adventure together. With the right preparation and a little extra love, every journey can become a cherished chapter in your shared story!
