As temperatures rise, it's essential to keep our pups cool and comfortable! Dogs are particularly vulnerable to heat, and it's our responsibility as paw-rents to ensure they stay safe during a heatwave!
Here are PAWD’s top tips to beat the heat:
Fresh water!
Hydration is key. Always make sure your dog has access to fresh, clean water! If you can, please multiple water bowls around the house, and try adding ice cubes to keep their bowl cool and refreshing.
A cool resting spot
Ensure your pup has a cool area in your home to relax, for example a tiled floor, a shaded spot in the garden, or even a cooling mat or damp towel to lie on.
Limit exercise
During a heatwave, minimise exercise. Walk your dog early in the morning or late in the evening when temperatures are cooler and avoid strenuous activities. Alternatively, introduce enrichment activities like snuffle mats to keep them entertained.
Ice, ice baby!
Frozen treats are a great way to keep your dog cool and hydrated. Freeze dog-safe fruits like blueberries or make ice cubes with their daily bottle of PAWD DRINKS (the functional benefits are retained whether served frozen, chilled or at room temp!)
NEVER leave your dog in a parked car!
Temperatures inside a parked car can rise rapidly, leading to heatstroke - or worse. Even with the windows slightly open, it's never safe to leave your dog in the car during warm weather!
Provide shade outdoors
If your dog spends time outside, ensure there is plenty of shaded space where they can escape the sun. Trees, awnings, and umbrellas can provide the necessary shade.
Be aware of heatstroke
Be aware of the signs of heatstroke, which include excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, vomiting, and uncoordinated movements. If you notice any of these symptoms, move your dog to a cooler place and contact your vet immediately.
Keep paws protected
A hot pavement and sand can burn your dog’s paw pads. If the ground is too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for your dog's paws!
Grooming
Regular grooming can help keep your dog cool by removing excess fur. However, don't be tempted to shave their coat completely, as the fur also protects them from sunburn!
Stay cool and take care!
