Fireworks season – Your dog’s enemy!
As we pull on our wellies, grab our coats, and light our sparklers in anticipation of the explosive colour show ahead, it's easy to forget that dogs don’t share the same excitement. While fireworks are a source of celebration for us, for our furry friends, these unexpected loud bangs and flashing lights often trigger intense fear and stress which is why it is crucial to understand how fireworks affect your dog and what steps you can begin to take now, to ensure they are ready for the season ahead.
Over 50% of dogs suffer from anxiety related to fireworks. The loud, sudden explosions frighten dogs, sending many into a state of anxiety that can last long after the noise stops. When the fireworks go ‘bang’, dogs experience the ‘fight or flight’ response, much like we do when we are shocked, scared or caught off guard. It is this response that leads to trembling, barking or even attempts to run away (from the perceived danger).

- 2. Use Background Noise – Playing calming music or leaving the TV on loud can be a great way to drown out the noise of fireworks.
- 3. Comfort and Reassurance - Some dogs feel better when their owners are nearby. Stay close, engaging with your dog, speaking in a calm, reassuring voice all help to make your dog feel safe.
