How To Keep Your Dog Calm During Fireworks

How to keep your dog calm during fireworks

Fireworks season – Your dog’s enemy!

As we pull on our wellies, grab our coats, and light our sparklers in anticipation of the explosive colour show ahead, it's easy to forget that dogs don’t share the same excitement. While fireworks are a source of celebration for us, for our furry friends, these unexpected loud bangs and flashing lights often trigger intense fear and stress which is why it is crucial to understand how fireworks affect your dog and what steps you can begin to take now, to ensure they are ready for the season ahead.

Over 50% of dogs suffer from anxiety related to fireworks. The loud, sudden explosions frighten dogs, sending many into a state of anxiety that can last long after the noise stops. When the fireworks go ‘bang’, dogs experience the ‘fight or flight’ response, much like we do when we are shocked, scared or caught off guard. It is this response that leads to trembling, barking or even attempts to run away (from the perceived danger).

To add to this, many dogs experience behavioural changes throughout this anxiety-provoking time with shaking and shivering being very common. Some dogs even show destructive behaviours like chewing on furniture or trying to dig through doors, all very clear signs that you dog is in deep distress.

So, what can we do about it?

One of the best ways to help your dog during fireworks season is to create a calm and safe environment:

  1. 1. Set-up a safe space – bring their beds, favourite blanket and toys into a quiet room in your house making a comforting atmosphere for them.
  2. 2. Use Background Noise – Playing calming music or leaving the TV on loud can be a great way to drown out the noise of fireworks.
  3. 3. Comfort and Reassurance - Some dogs feel better when their owners are nearby. Stay close, engaging with your dog, speaking in a calm, reassuring voice all help to make your dog feel safe.
  4. 4. Natural Supplements – Providing your dog with supplements to ease their state of mind is one of the best ways about doing so. The functional ingredients help to desensitise the nervous system allowing a more relaxed and calmer mindset for the season.

Firework season doesn’t need to be a nightmare for dogs – by understanding their fears and knowing the steps one can take to help to alleviate the anxiety is so important. Your dog looks to you for comfort, and with the right approach, you can make this season easier on them.
